Project Overview

As part of a collaborative team of designers, I contributed to one of the most significant brand initiatives in Cognizant's history — the global visual identity rebrand. My specific contribution was helping convert the 66-page PDF brand guidelines into a dynamic, URL-accessible online portal that serves as a single source of truth for Cognizant's global design teams.

Cognizant's "Intuition Engineered" brand system is built on three design principles — Dimension, Perspective, and Clarity — expressed through a rich mesh gradient palette, geometric triangle shapes, and the custom typeface Gellix. The challenge was to make this system not just documented, but truly alive and accessible across the entire 289,500-person organization.

My Role

I worked within a design team to help translate every element of the brand identity into web-native format. This required understanding the brand system deeply enough to render it faithfully in the browser — not as screenshots of a PDF, but as interactive, copyable, always-accurate references.

My focus areas included the color system documentation, gradient rendering, typographic hierarchy translation, and ensuring all color combinations met the accessibility standards specified in the guidelines themselves.

The Digital Guidelines Portal

The core deliverable was a URL-accessible brand portal — a living document that replaces the static PDF for the design team's day-to-day reference. The portal was built to mirror the brand guidelines' own structure while adding the navigability, searchability, and instant accessibility that a PDF cannot provide.

Key portal sections included:

The Brand Color System

Cognizant's palette is built around Midnight Blue (#000048) as a foundational anchor, with three gradient families — each inspired by the brand symbol — providing depth and movement across communications. Documenting these faithfully for web required rendering each gradient at spec, providing all color formats, and mapping accessible pairings.

Impact

Moving the guidelines from PDF to URL fundamentally changed how the brand system could be used. Instead of a document that required downloading, version-tracking, and redistribution with every update, the portal could be updated once and immediately reflected everywhere — across 109 offices and 289,500 employees worldwide.

Accessibility was built in from the start: the portal itself was designed to meet WCAG standards, consistent with the color pairing guidance in the Cognizant guidelines, ensuring the brand system could be referenced and implemented correctly by anyone on the team.
